Family practice doctors receive three years of training in adult medicine, pediatrics and obstetrics/gynecology. Family practice doctors take care of families. Internal medicine doctors receive three years of training in adult medicine only. Both types of providers have undergone specialized training in preventing, diagnosing and treating a wide variety of medical illnesses, including critically ill patients.
An Internist is a physician who has completed residency training in Internal Medicine. Internal Medicine focuses on the health care needs of adults ages 18 and over. In addition to providing primary care services to adults, internists have been trained to care for critically ill patients in hospitals. They have diagnosed and treated a wide variety of medical diseases that may affect you now and as you grow older.
A Nurse Practitioner (NP) is a registered nurse who has undergone advanced formal education and training in a wide range of health care services. Nurse practitioners are skilled in physical examination and the treatment of many common primary care and gynecologic problems, both acute and chronic. They provide some of the same care as physicians including writing prescriptions and referring to specialists. They have close working relationships with physicians.
A Physician Assistant (PA) practices medicine under the direction of a physician and is licensed in the State that they practice. Physician Assistants must complete advanced training through an accredited formal educational program. As members of health care teams, Physician Assistants take medical histories, examine and treat patients, make diagnoses, prescribe medications, counsel patients and can perform minor procedures.

The doctor may want you to be seen by a specialist for certain conditions. Please allow up to seven business days for your insurance company to respond to our request (often may be ready sooner). In some cases we may need to contact your insurance company to further explain your need to see the specialist. After this is done, our office will contact you to inform you how to make your appointment with the specialist or to schedule your radiology exam. Please note that sometimes after the referral is approved, there may be a wait to see the specialist. If you have not heard from our office regarding your referral within 7 days, please call 303-763-4900 and select Option 4.

These can include questions on general medical conditions; follow up appointments, medication questions, lab result requests, referral inquiries, or general questions about the office – all in an encrypted, secure environment. Please do not use the Patient Portal for emergency medical questions or questions that require an immediate response.
