
Michael Phelps will set his sights on a record-extending 20th Olympic swimming gold tonight when he tries to wrest back the 200m butterfly title from Chad le Clos.
Michael Phelps swam the 200m butterfly as his only event in his Olympic debut at the Sydney Games in 2000. He won gold in the event in 2004 and 2008, but fell short in 2012.
Le Clos took gold over Phelps by 0.05 seconds. In Monday night’s semifinals.
Last night, Hungary’s Tamas Kenderesi won the heat in 1:53.96. Phelps clocked 1:54.12 to le Clos’ 1:55.19 seconds.
All move into tonights final, which will be Phelps’ fifth.
Phelps, the most decorated Olympian of all time, has already topped the podium in Rio after the USA’s 4x100m win, and will now go for individual glory at the age of 31.
