A 2015 Outstanding Women in Business Finalist for Health Care

A veteran in health care operations, Ruth Benton has helped New West Physicians be a model of patient-centered care for Colorado and the rest of the country.

The doctor-owned medical practice — with some 95 care providers in 17 offices — aims to provide top-quality service and care “to every patient, every time,” according to New West. To achieve that goal, the group and Benton have created an organizational structure based on being innovative and adapting quickly to the ever-changing health-care delivery system. The physician group was the first in Colorado to manage a Medicare Advantage Risk product, and was featured in a national study on accountable care by the American Hospital Association.

“The Accountable Care Act has gotten people in health care to prove to consumers they’re offering value. … Physicians come to me with ideas, and I get them done because I know all the logistics of health care,” said Benton, who has an MBA from Colorado State University plus wide work experience with businesses including Blue Cross Blue Shield and Swedish Medical Center.

Health care got into the Wyoming native’s blood as a youngster, when she was a candy striper at her hometown hospital, and the industry remains exciting to her. “I’m making a difference with consumers,” she said.
